OSTOMY SUPPORT SERVICES
Some illnesses and diseases require the surgical formation of a colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy or continent diversion. Life with an ostomy can be challenging, but you are not alone. With the right support, counseling and guidance you can enjoy most activities just as you did before surgery. The Outpatient Ostomy Clinic, housed in the Aventura Wound Healing Center, will provide you with the help you need. A certified ostomy nurse specialist (previously called an "E.T.") will assist you in living life the way you want to!
Pre-operative education and stoma-site marking will assure that your post-operative course is smooth. Your fears will be diminished as a compassionate, knowledgeable professional answers your questions and assists you with the life style adjustments required.
Post-operatively you will be taught how to:
- Choose appropriate supplies
- Apply appliances for comfort and security
- Prevent leakage
- Eliminate odor
- Avoid peristomal skin problems
- Prevent complications
- Modify your wardrobe
- Prevent dehydration & malnutrition
- Return to your place of employment
- Enjoy travel and social activities
- Return to physical/sporting activities
The Ostomy Support Group meets monthly on the second Wesnesday of each month from 6:00pm - 7:30pm, providing an atmosphere of support and education, where ostomates share vital information with each other and hear lecture presentations of common interest to all.
